Impact

Impact to date

Since 2017, Trish has worked with over 50 teachers and leaders of all levels across a growing number of schools. She has also coached over 70 executive leaders on the NPQEL led by ASCL, for whom she is the lead coach.

Feedback from senior leaders, collected by CPDBee, shows that Trish’s work: increases their confidence, improves self-awareness and clarity of their goals, values and next steps; improves planning and problem solving; improves staff performance; and has led even led to improved student results.

Impact measurements used

Trish works to grow and develop leadership ability.

At the start of coaching relationships, she holds a three-way meeting to agree goals with the head teacher and the clients she is coaching.

As the project progresses, she monitors leaders’ progress against these goals. Between sessions, she records clients’ action plans and shares them in advance of the next session to help them prepare for it.

She also meets with the head teacher to review progress made. She encourages headteachers to review her impact against the school development plan and the other outcomes she aims to improve: retention and wellbeing. These reviews identify areas to determine next steps to embed her impact.

External assessment of impact

Trish has not yet had an independent, external evaluation of her impact.

Expertise

Programme design philosophy

Trish’s support starts from a place of honesty and clarity. She insists the school is honest with participants about why her support has been commissioned and she insists both the school and the participants are clear about the expected outcomes. This is established in a three-way conversation between Trish, the school and the participants.

Her coaching programmes typically have a six to eight session plan sustained over three months. In the first session, her clients set goals to help them meet their personal and school development outcomes. They also design the working relationship. From this point, the relationship is entirely confidential but clients are welcome to discuss their progress with their school. Each session reviews ‘homework’ and what they have learned from applying it to their practice in their context. Each session begins by identifying what is important to them right there and then. She coaches through the client through the topic with an eye on how it helps them move forward and achieve the goals set.

Between sessions, Trish offers additional support over the phone and email to ensure agreed actions are taken and offer additional support. She also ‘checks in’ with the school to review progress made while maintaining confidentiality.

Team experience and expertise

A former deputy head teacher in three large London secondary schools, Trish Dooley has more than twenty years school leadership experience. She has been trained as an Ofsted Inspector and worked as a teaching and learning consultant, where she has overseen whole school professional development that was individualised to every member of staff yet underpinned by school values.

Trish Dooley CPDBee

Since training as a coach, she has achieved the Coaches Training Institute accreditation CPCC (Certified Professional Coactive Coach) and the International Coach Federation (ICF) ACC (Associate Certified Coach), of which there are only 590 in the UK.

She believes, while mentoring has its place in organisations, coaching takes clients to a place where they able to make significant changes for themselves and use the experience to make shifts in other areas of their lives if they have got stuck.

Testimonials

Green Spring Academy, Jo Armitage, Associate Headteacher

Trish has coached four Middle teachers at our secondary academy for a period of time. She is an unstinting professional, who inspires confidence with her skill and empathy.

She draws on her wealth of experience in education to support and challenge colleagues through structured coaching sessions.

She was keen to establish the purpose of the coaching from the academy’s point of view and to build from this to the particular priorities of the individuals.

She asks them to prepare, gives them follow-up tasks and holds them to account for the use of the sessions. Participants have been extremely positive about her work and her impact has been tangible.

Two Bridges School, Sue Beauchamp, Headteacher

Trish is incredibly personable and able to communicate effectively with a wide range of personnel. She is a highly professional and boundaried coach. Her questioning skills are exceptional and well honed. Finally, Trish is able to develop an environment of trust and confidence quickly when working with colleagues which supports the level of impact she has as a coach especially with people inexperienced in working in a coaching situation.

The impact of her work includes; increased leadership confidence, more effective planning and implementation of problem solved initiatives, a more developed group ethos of shared expertise and creative problem solving approaches.

Oasis Academy Silvertown, Emily Boxer, Deputy Principal

Trish has worked as a leadership coach with all the middle and senior leaders in the academy over the past two academic years.

Leaders here have found Trish to be supportive, encouraging and solution focused. Her empathy and positive approach builds confidence in those she works with and facilitates genuine and honest reflection on values and strengths. In addition, Trish knows when to challenge or push leaders for change or improvement.

Those who have worked with Trish find that their confidence has increased, they are more aware of their strengths and they are now clearer about their goals, values and next steps as leaders.

Regent High School, Rosemary Leeke, Former Headteacher

Trish’s skill in asking direct but non-judgemental and non-threatening questions helped me to find the confidence to respond decisively and successfully to some difficult professional and personal challenges as a leader

Harris Academy Bermondsey, Liz Nuttall, Assistant Principal

Trish has helped me secure my first senior leadership role through her coaching. She is the ultimate professional who makes you feel instantly at ease with her coaching style. I always end our coaching calls feeling energised, refreshed and ready to take on any challenge. I cannot recommend her enough.

Thomas Tallis School, Michelle Springer, Director of Guidance

Trish coached me throughout my NPQSL. I chose her for her professionalism and the way she handled people and situations. I admired the way she seemed to hold a personal connection with each individual at the same time as being able to challenge and critique. She helped me to learn how to deal with difficult people in a positive and constructive manner through this modelling and by helping me to ‘rehearse’ difficult conversations. Our coaching sessions were always productive and inspiring. Her skill as a listener meant that I felt comfortable talking through ideas. She seemed to be able to understand the essence of what I wanted to do or where I was at and lead me to that same understanding through insightful questioning. Whenever I went to her with a particular difficulty or obstacle she was able to help me see things from a broader perspective and to appreciate what I could gain from facing such challenges. Trish invested herself fully in the coaching role and her encouragement and ability to draw out the best in people made me believe wholly in myself and my ability to lead

Regent High School, Chandu Hirani, Assistant Headteacher

As a result of working together with Trish, I have become more confident, better at delegating to and empowering my team members. She has an innate sense of curiosity which combined with keen and focused listening skills, enables me to be reflective on my choices, then making the right one.
