Delivery location

TKAT TSA delivers programmes in London, Kent, Essex, Surrey, East Sussex, West Sussex and Hampshire.

Impact

Impact to date

Since 2017, TKAT TSA has delivered its NPQs to more than 65 leaders and reached hundreds more through its suite of leadership programmes. Thousands more have benefitted from its other CPD programmes and biennial Professional Learning Days.

They report their headteachers are noticing a subsequent ability to recruit higher quality candidates from a larger field of talent. Feedback from senior leaders, collected by CPDBee, suggests their work has: improved leadership understanding, skills and confidence, and improved wellbeing and professional development.

Their analysis shows they are also making an impact on pupil progress; of the 10 largest Multi Academy Trusts, TKAT was 1st in reading progress in 2017 (up from 2nd in 2016) and 3rd in writing progress (up from 8th in 2016).

Impact measurements used

TKAT TSA aims to maximise CPD benefits and improve outcomes for each academy they work with.

Immediately after programmes, they capture impact in terms of perceived usefulness, quality and benefits of their programmes through surveys. They also capture participants’ intention to implement learning into teaching and leadership practice.

For some programmes, follow up work is carried out three to six months later to evaluate the longer-term impact on student outcomes.

They use historical data to track the career progression of the SCITT trainees within the trust. They cross reference this with their CPD records to give them an indication of their impact on their progression.

They also use Guskey’s ‘5 Levels of Evaluation’ to structure interviews with headteachers to assess the impact they have had at different levels of their schools.

External assessment of impact

TKAT TSA has not yet had an independent, external evaluation of their impact.

Expertise

Programme design philosophy

TKAT TSA subscribes to Dylan Wiliam’s view that “Every teacher needs to improve, not because they are not good enough, but because they can be even better.” They deliberately align their courses with the DfE Standards for teachers’ professional development.

All of their programmes have a focus on improving and evaluating pupil outcomes. This includes both their teaching and leadership courses. Their courses can be adapted to suit a school’s bespoke needs and context. Their expert facilitators ensure they meet the needs of the cohort in front of them. They are continually refined and evaluated to ensure delegates receive cutting edge professional development.

They are underpinned by robust evidence and expertise. They are informed by latest research and professional insight. Each course is aligned with what the evidence shows works in similar schools and classrooms.

They place a high value on collaboration and expert challenge. They give teachers and leaders the opportunity to come to together to learn and incorporate joint practice development to ensure practice is challenged and shared across their trust and beyond.

They are sustained over time. They design iterative programmes rather than one off workshops. They work with schools before programmes and plan follow activities between sessions and once programmes end to ensure teachers have the opportunity for deliberate practice of new skills and that sessions result in real and sustained change.

Team experience and expertise

TKAT TSA have a core delivery team of seven people who work directly with the TSA. Regional delivery teams deliver programmes depending on the need in different areas.

TKAT Group Director of Learning - Rachel Tizard

TKAT Group Director of Learning – Rachel Tizard

They have seven facilitators trained by Ambition School Leadership to deliver the NPQML, NPQSL and NPQH. In addition, they have over 20 Specialist Leaders Education (SLEs) who can support programme delivery and also offer bespoke school to school support.

The TKAT TSA team are experienced facilitators. They range from serving Executive Headteachers and Directors of Education, who deliver their NPQH to other current or recent senior leaders, who design and deliver the range of other NPQs and in-house professional development programmes for teachers and leaders. Many are also SLEs or have a track record and experience of outreach work.

All of their programme facilitators are required to undertake TKAT TSAs facilitation skills workshop and further training to develop knowledge and understanding of the concept and content of individual programmes.

Facilitators of the Beyond Best Practice pedagogy programme go through the programme themselves before they facilitate it. Their NPQ facilitators are all accredited by Ambition School Leadership.

All of their facilitators and programmes are subject to TKAT TSA’s rigorous quality assurance process which is designed to develop and hone their skills.

Testimonials

Rainham School for Girls, Vicki Shaw, Head of School

TKAT TSA have offered a wide range of programmes to us including bespoke coaching, observing learning, pedagogy in action, stepping up to leadership to name a few.

We have had several senior leaders pass their NPQSL and the input in terms of pedagogical direction has transformed teaching and learning in our school and developed those new to Leadership.

The programmes they offer are up to date and innovative and the feedback from staff has always been incredibly positive. The delivery and course content is always high quality, engaging with a wide range of different activities to promote thinking and application in the delegates’ own contexts.

Our most recent example has been around developing questioning in the classroom, our facilitator delivered a highly engaging session to Leadership and then equipped them to deliver to the rest of the school, this was followed up with a joint Quality Assurance visit to see questioning in action.

The follow up has always been supportive and one of the biggest selling point of the TSA is how things can be tailored to your own school.

TKAT Central, Neil Small, Regional Executive Director

The ability of the TKAT TSA is that in their menu of offering professional development they have a large amount of evidence driven programmes that have enabled schools and staff to move from one category to the next.

The depth of their understandings reflected in the courses which are not ‘teach by numbers’ driven but based in sound understanding of pedagogy. This enables them to discuss in depth on their courses with the consequential impact being stronger and having more longevity.

Pebsham Primary Academy, Rachel Martin, Headteacher

We have been delighted with the quality of the training offered by TKAT Teaching School Alliance over the last 4 years.  We have accessed a range of training for different members of staff, working in different roles across the school.

Over the last year, two of my Middle Leaders accessed the TKAT ‘Leadership in Action’ training.  Through the course, my Middle Leaders were developed using both training and coaching – developing their skills, confidence and leadership understanding.  Also accessing the training were two local schools, both struggling to access high quality leadership training – they have both passed their thanks to me for suggesting the TKAT training as their have had similar positive experiences with their Middle Leaders.

The Deputy Head training has also increased the leadership capacity in our school, through coaching, mentoring and training.  I feel that the approach used, by the TKAT trainers, has been key to the impact seen within the school.

We have also been able to access EYFS Leadership training which contained a practical, in school, element for the Senior Leaders participating in the training – again, this was delivered with incredible knowledge and was carefully aimed at meeting the needs of all delegates. It was extremely informative and has had an impact on school methodology and in our understanding and interpretation of EYFS data.

As a school, the TSA led bespoke Coaching training for my teaching staff.  This training was delivered with expertise, skill and a real understanding of the mixed personalities and abilities of a full teaching staff.  The training supported the wellbeing of my staff as well as increasing their professional development.

All training accessed through the TSA has been of a very high quality with impact for the school and the delegates and therefore impact for the pupils at the heart.    The training has always been delivered professionally and with skill, ensuring a clear understanding from all attending.   The courses have always been well publicised and the content clearly explained to ensure it matches the needs of the school.  Much of the training has a bespoke element to ensure the needs of the individuals are met and supported.

I would not hesitate to recommend the training provided by the TKAT TSA

Drapers Mills Primary Academy, Joe Manclark, Headteacher

Excellent support at all times and delivery is always from individuals expert in the chosen field. The TSA listen to the schools and accommodate their training needs. From my own perspective, TKAT TSA have provided whole school training to my staff on 3 occasions already this year (challenge, feedback and metacognition) as well as providing my SLT with coaching training. All of these areas of development were identified through the schools development plan. If the school raises a development need, TKAT TSA always find the most appropriate individual from across our MAT to deliver the support they need.

Cleve Park School, Jenni Tyler Maher, Executive Headteacher

There are a number of different programmes, which colleagues from my school and from my region have engaged with, that have been highly received.  The Leadership in Action programme has benefited many middle leaders who have found the content to be practical and useful, offering guidance and support that has made a real difference.  The training TKAT TSA has delivered for cover supervisors has also been of great benefit and has had a direct (positive) impact in the classroom.  Can’t recommend them highly enough.

Excellent support at all times and delivery is always from individuals expert in the chosen field. The TSA listen to the schools and accommodate their training needs. From my own perspective, TKAT TSA have provided whole school training to my staff on 3 occasions already this year (challenge, feedback and metacognition) as well as providing my SLT with coaching training. All of these areas of development were identified through the schools development plan. If the school raises a development need, TKAT TSA always find the most appropriate individual from across our MAT to deliver the support they need.
