Impact

Impact to date

Over the past 15 years, Chris has worked with over 350 schools.

His own analysis shows that 87% of the NQTs he has trained have passed, many of whom continued working at their school and progressed to leadership positions. He also notes that two schools deemed Special Measures by Ofsted, which he has worked with, have moved to more favourable categories.

Feedback from senior leaders, collected by CPDBee, reveals his work improves teaching practice, improves middle and senior leadership skills – including observation and giving feedback and improves student outcomes. One school credits him for helping them to achieve the best KS4 results in the south west region.

Impact measurements used

Chris aims to improve teaching and leadership practice. He measures the impact of his work using feedback surveys, observing changes in practice when makes follow up visits, gathering reports and testimonials from senior leaders about the impact of his work in the classroom, observations made in Ofsted reports following inspections and by tracking the improvements in his client schools’ policies he has helped them develop. He also tracks the career progression of the teachers he has trained.

External assessment of impact

Chris has not yet had an independent, external evaluation of his impact.

Expertise

Programme design philosophy

The training Chris provides is bespoke to every school; it is always based on schools’ contexts and needs. He seeks to understand what they are in advance so both he and schools are clear about the expected outcomes.

His programmes are pragmatic and realistic; he is committed to providing training that is firmly based in concrete, practical and actionable strategies to improve teaching and leadership.

His services are underpinned by evidence and expertise; he is committed to helping schools translate evidence-based strategies into practice using his 30 years of experiences in education.

The support he provides is often sustained over a period of time, which allows him to collaborate with, challenge and support schools. This also enables him to evaluate the impact of his work on an ongoing basis. He works closely with school leadership teams to improve school, departmental and individual priorities.

Team experience and expertise

Chris has over 30 years’ experience in education. A teacher for eighteen years, he was a successful head of PE and went on to become a Teaching and Learning Consultant at Somerset Local Authority. He is a successful teacher and was a middle leader seven years and a senior leader overseeing staff development in a highly successful 3-16 school. He is also Senior Specialist Leader of Education (SLE), a Leadership Matters Ambassador, and a Teach First Lead Mentor. As a freelance consultant, Chris has worked in over 320 schools, colleges, academies and organisations. He has been a part of several teams that have taken schools out of unfavourable categories to secure good judgments in inspections.

Testimonials

Bridgewater College Trust, Peter Elliott, CEO

Highly, highly recommended and [would recommend] without reservation Chris is exceptional. His knowledge, experience and uniquely engaging manner with all staff means he is invaluable when it comes to improving teacher practice. There is nobody better.

Bradley Stoke Community School, Steve Moir, Headteacher

I worked with Chris for two years and found his level of expertise incredibly high, his ability to support colleagues, using coaching models as well as supportive mentoring as appropriate, in a hugely effective way that had a significant impact on the quality of each individual’s teaching.

Whilst we worked at BCA together, the outcomes for our KS4 cohort achieved the highest progress of any school in the south west region. Chris was a key element of the team and the most instrumental single factor in improving the teaching and learning across the school which enabled those students to achieve their phenomenal results.

I am now a headteacher in another Trust and have recommended Chris to the Trust. He has worked in all Trust Schools and is a leading consultant on the South Gloucestershire SSIF bid in improving leadership and disadvantaged outcomes, based on Chris’s outstanding track record.

The Olympus Academy Trust, Dave Baker, CEO

I have asked Chris to work with all 4 secondary schools in my multi-academy trust as he has had such high impact with the school he started working with.

He has great experience and skill in leadership coaching and has worked with senior leaders and Middle teachers to develop practice, including classroom observation and feedback skills to use when coaching teachers who need to improve their practice. Chris is able to draw on years of classroom practice and has great credibility with those he has trained.

A sign of Chris’ success is that there is always a time lag when requesting some of his time as he is so popular and booked up a long way in advance. I commend Chris as an excellent coach and teaching and learning expert.
