Impact

Impact to date

Since 2015 Alison has delivered over 300 hours of 1:1 and group coaching to a variety of organisations in both the private and public sectors. Through her 1:1 coaching, group coaching and he coaching skills programme she has worked with approximately 50 teachers and leaders across 30 primary, secondary and special schools.

Alison reports that all participants on her Aspirant Leader programme reported increased confidence and undertaken work in other schools since beginning the programme. Her analysis of her programme for future head teachers, shows all participants had made progress towards headship, with some securing promotions or acting headship roles, with one securing a headship. She says her 1:1 coaching has helped leaders to establish themselves as effective member of new teams and build a leadership structures that enables them to work more strategically.

Impact measurements used

Alison’s work aims to support school leaders to build skills, personal resilience and wellbeing so they can deliver their best.

To measure her impact, she uses her clients’ desired outcomes as the starting point and monitors their progress against them through a combination of client reflection and self-reporting.

In her group coaching programme, she uses an impact measurement tool for aspirant leaders to assess their performance against set criteria at the outset and then again at the end of the programme.

In her coaching skills programme, participants complete a coaching skills inventory at the start and set personal targets for improvement at the end.

She also routinely collects feedback from her clients and commissioners.

External assessment of impact

Alison has not yet had an independent, external evaluation of her impact.

Expertise

Programme design philosophy

Alison’s coaching and training programme are rooted in academic research into effective coaching practice and leadership development. Her approach draws on various person-centred methodologies, including Neuro Linguistic Programming and Clean Coaching.

She takes a non-directive approach, with the client taking the lead as she facilitates their thinking through careful listening, questioning and empathy. While the sessions are client led, she supports them to make progress toward the desired outcome. She begins by ‘contracting’ with the client, sometimes together with the client’s school. She supports the client to explore the desired outcomes and regularly checks on progress towards the outcomes throughout.

Her programmes typically span over weeks and months allowing space for learning and practice between sessions. At the end of the programme she encourages them to reflect on their learning and identify resources and strengths for the future.

Her coaching and training programmes stand out because she can combine the understanding and passion for education, which she gained through her long career in it, with her expertise as an executive coach to support those who are best to find their own solutions – schools themselves.

Team experience and expertise

Alison has more than 25 years’ experience in education, initially as a senior leader in secondary schools and more recently as the head of a local authority school improvement service. Her experience means she has a rich understanding of the challenges school leaders face. Her expertise in leading high-performing teams consistently delivered excellent outcomes for children and young people.

She is an experienced and qualified coach who takes her own development very seriously. She has an Advanced Certificate in Executive Coaching accredited at Masters level by Bristol Business School and Level 7 by the Institute of leadership and Management. She is accredited (Association of NLP) NLP Practitioner. As a full member of the Association of Coaching, she abides by their code of ethics and is accredited through their executive coaching accreditation scheme.

Recent personal development areas include clean caching, Time to Think, neuroscience and creativity in coaching. She regularly attends supervision to reflect on her work and identify where she can continue to improve.
